Dec 7 1941 I was 7 years old. It was a sunday afternoon , no snow and a warm day. The family were together for Sunday meal. when the announcement came over the radio. The Japanese had attacked Pearl Harbor> Not knowing what had happened my Dad explained it to me.

Things changed after that,Brother George was already in the Army in Purto Rico. Eddie enlisted in the navy and John was still in high school , a senior, He became an Air Raid Warden as did a lot of the young fellow. War sure clears out a town of men. It seemed deserted . War it changed all of us, we waited for letters to arrive so we would know that our boys were still safe. And please don't let the police chief knock on your door cause it was bad news. He was the first to receive the telegram from the war dept with bad news. John graduated and joined the Army. We bought We bought stamps with our pennies and saved them in a book to buy a @25.00 dollar war bond.

We had rationing of gas , sugar and probably a lot of things that I don't remember. No butter but a new product appeared called oleo, it was in a clear bag with a yellow button which you broke an kneaded into a butter subsitute,

As kids in school we helped the war effort by gathering dried milk pods to be used in the making of life jackets for flotation.

Cars were fitted with half moon shaped pieces of metal over the headlights to direct the lights downward so they showed up less from the sky.

Boys of my age did a lot of drawings of dogfights between our fighters and the Japanese. I believe that there were a lot of good artists, the drawing were always posted on the walls.

It was a bad time and yet it was a good time, the movies were terrific and there was movietone news that we all watched
